Independent flood risk management advice

Ruben Jongejan is the statutory director and principal consultant of Jongejan Risk Management Consulting BV. Ruben studied Civil Engineering at Delft University of Technology and Political Science at Leiden University in the Netherlands. He obtained his PhD from Delft University of Technology in 2008. During his PhD studies he served on committees of the Netherlands Hazardous Materials Council, worked as a visiting academic at the London School of Economics and did advisory work. After completing his doctorate, Ruben started as an independent consultant.

Since 2008, Ruben has worked on numerous flood risk management projects with government bodies, research institutes, regional water authorities and engineering firms, in the Netherlands and abroad. Ruben is still affiliated with the Department of Hydraulic Engineering of Delft University. He is also a member of the Netherlands Commission for Environmental Assessment (NCEA) and a member of the Safety and Flood Risk Approach Workgroup of the Dutch Expertise Network for Flood Protection (ENW). Amongst other, he co-authored the ENW's Fundamentals on Flood Protection which tells the story behind the Dutch flood protection standards and the Dutch tools and guidelines for flood safety assessments and the design of flood defences.
